Scientists are researchers and mentors, scholars, teachers, adventurers, entrepreneurs, artists, detectives, and storytellers. It is a complex job, done by people with diverse backgrounds, multiple viewpoints, and varied goals. Most modern day scientists are still trained using the ancient apprenticeship model. This means that training is highly individualized and personal, and learning and progress are very much the student’s responsibility. Good mentoring and a supportive network of peers are critical at all stages of a scientist’s education, from high school through Distinguished Professor.
This website is intended for scientists and scientists-in-training to share experiences and opportunities. The viewpoints and audio-video tabs will navigate to written and multimedia experiences of people at different stages of their careers in science. We invite you to use these resources to investigate how people become researchers, mentors, and science communicators.
